Find Large Files on Your Mac

Mac only We've covered quite a few free disk space analyzers for Windows over the years, and I figured it would be worth throwing in one for Mac users as well. When it comes to a specific purpose like this the selection of free apps for Mac users is a lot more limited than it is on Windows, but that's not to say there are no good options available.

Find and Replace Text in Files

Windows only A few months ago we pointed out that Notepad++ has an option to find and replace text in multiple files, but that is obviously not the sole purpose of the app. If you need to perform a find and replace operation across multiple files I'd highly suggest that you try out a program that focuses on that kind of task, such as TextCrawler.

Songr: Find and Download Music

Windows only We've posted about other music download utilities in the past, and thought that Songr would be a good one to cover as well. It's a free program that can be used to search for music around the Internet, and more often than not can find high quality versions of the songs you're looking for.

Look Up an IP’s Geolocation

Looking up the geolocation of an IP address is something that's simple to do because there are so many sites out there providing the service for free. One downside is that many services cap you at how many requests you can make each day to try and avoid having people abuse their systems.

What Does Time Machine Backup Each Time?

Mac only Recently I had been noticing that each hour when my Time Machine backups ran there was an excessive amount of data being backed up. I could understand the data changing frequently given how much I use my computer, but the backups were still over 1GB even when the machine sat idle.

Quickly Search Through Text Files

Windows only Programs like Notepad++ are great because they provide powerful text file editing, but the searching can leave something to be desired. Text Filter is an app dedicated to searching through text files and it does a great job of it. It instantly highlights results as you type, and can optionally hide lines that don't contain any matches.

Website Helps Find Your Cellphone By Calling It

Some of the smartphones these days have really nice features to help you find your phone if it gets lost. With the iPhone, for example, you can use Apple's Find My iPhone to not only get a GPS location of the device, but you can also have it chime to help you realize that it is just sandwiched between your couch cushions.

Search for Text in Files

One of my favorite features in Vista/Windows 7 is the built-in search utility. It makes finding things a lot faster, and in some cases it can even search the content of a file. By default, however, it supports a limited number of file types when it comes to searching a file's content, but that is where the MariusSoft File Searcher comes in.

Similarity: Find and Remove Duplicate Music Files

Similarity is a pretty awesome app for anyone who doesn't keep their music library organized. I don't have a very large music library (just a few hundred songs), but I know people who have tens of thousands of songs. Once it starts getting that big I could see some duplicate songs sneaking in there...
