One of their goals with the project was to provide a way for web applications to interact naturally with your desktop. More recently they decided to drop the "Google" part of the name and just go by "Gears" so that people realize that it's for everyone to get involved with.

Last November, Zoho announced that they were adding offline editing support to Zoho Writer using Google Gears. We mentioned how ironic it was that Zoho was using Google's service (Google Gears) to make the offline editing support available, yet Google still wasn't offering any type of offline editing or synchronization option for Google Docs.

Google Gears Goes Mobile

Back in May of 2007, Google launched Google Gears which gives offline access to services and applications that are normally only available online. A few services that use Google Gears include Google Reader, Remember the Milk, and Zoho. Thus far it has been very useful for those using supported applications.

Google Calendar Offline Support Coming

The eagle-eyed Google Blogoscoped forum noticed that Google Gears has started prompting some users to enable offline support. Tony Ruscoe looked through some of the JavaScript code on the page, and managed to scrounge up two different lines that provide definite clues that Google Gears support for Google Calendar is coming soon.

Zoho Writer now with Google Gears

Earlier today Zoho launched a few new features. The first, and most notable item is support for Google Gears. You may remember the open source Google Gears project from when we discussed it back in May, which is when Google launched it with support for Google Reader. One-week later Remember the Milk launched their own offline support using Google Gears.

Google Kicks Offline Apps Into Gear

Google is taking applications offline with a new project called Gears. It’s an open source browser extension that’s available for Internet Explorer or Firefox that enables online applications to come offline. The first example of this is Google Reader. For Opera and Safari users, they’re workin’ on it, but it’s not quite ready yet.
