GnuCash: Free Accounting Software

Win; Mac; Linux A common question that I get asked in emails is whether I know of any free accounting software that is any good. Some people don't want to purchase applications like Quicken because it is way more advanced than what they are looking to do. All they want is a simple way to manage their finances, but at the same time something that offers more features than a basic spreadsheet.

CyberNotes: Mouse Gestures in Firefox, IE, and Opera

Keyboard shortcuts step aside! Mouse gestures have been around for quite some time, and are often used as a way to quickly issue commands. One of the places that these are used the most is in the web browser, and that's because a lot of repetitive actions are performed there. Just think about how many times each day you click the back or refresh buttons.

MyFive: Package Tracking Widgets

I don't know about you, but these days I find myself buying more and more stuff online rather than going to the store. Most things are cheaper on the Internet if you spend the time looking for a bargain, and nowadays many places will ship things for free. The problem is trying to keep up with all of the packages you're supposed to be receiving.

What do You Think of the Firefox 3 Themes?

Firefox 3 is scheduled to be finished in the next month or two, and with it users will begin seeing a completely redesigned interface that is tailored to the operating system that they are using. This version of Firefox has already made significant advances in terms of performance, and it seems as though the only thing people have been criticizing in Firefox 3 are the new themes.

OpenOffice.org 3.0 Beta Download

Win; Mac; Linux It's here! I've been waiting for OpenOffice.org 3.0 Beta for what seems like forever. I was getting a little bit worried when it wasn't released on April 30th like it was supposed to be, and the release date was never revised. Luckily it's only rolling in about a week late.

New Poll: 64-bit vs. 32-bit

Earlier this month we asked CyberNet readers, "How old is your primary computer?" Over 950 of you responded and as it turns out, 30% of you, larger than any other group, are using a computer that's less than one year old. Coming in next was 21% of you who said that you are using a computer that's 1-2 years old.

Dell Finds Success with Ubuntu?

It's coming up on one year since Dell started selling computers that are preinstalled with Ubuntu Linux. Towards the end of last year some stats started rolling in saying that Dell had only sold 40,000 Ubuntu machines, which equates to about 220 units per day. That's not too shabby considering the only form of advertising for the Dell Ubuntu machines is by word of mouth.

Compiz Fusion Adds Cylinder Effect

Compiz Fusion is quickly becoming an important part of many Linux distributions, and I don't think that anyone would argue that the cube effect for switching between desktops is one of the most hyped features. Well, the cube could very well be on its way to retirement thanks to the cylinder effect that was just added.

New gOS Space 2.9 even more Mac-like?

Last year Wal-Mart started selling a Linux-powered computer for under $200 called the gPC. After some confusion amongst consumers they decided to boot the budget computers from the store shelves, and offer it solely online. Ever since it looks as though the operating system that powers the low-cost computer, called gOS, has started to go through an identity crisis with Mac OS X.

CanSecWest Results: Vista & Mac were both Hacked

We wrote about the CanSecWest conference last week when the hacking contest was on its second day. The second day consisted of stock configurations along with browsers and some mail applications. Amazon MP3 Downloader Available for Linux

Amazon MP3 has been getting a lot of great reviews for their 100% DRM-free music service that's been offered since September 2007. They actually have a rather large selection of music, and being able to play it on any of your devices without restrictions is a huge plus. And you don't pay any more for music from Amazon than you do on iTunes.

February 2008 Browser Stats: IE Plunging

February was a good month for almost all of the browsers out there except for Internet Explorer, according to Net Applications. From December 2006 to August 2007 Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser was able to maintain a substantial 79% marketshare. In the last 6 or 7 months, however, they've been dropping just under 1% each month.
