I use the awesome Notepad++ text editor all of the time, and it's an excellent tool for making quick edits to code or other specially formatted files such as XML. For dozens of different file types it is able to perform syntax highlighting where it formats the text with various colors to make reading the files easier.

As many of you know I am always on the lookout for a good Notepad replacement, and generally I tend to always fall back to using Notepad++. It's a solid application with a lot of great tools, but in some aspects Notepad++ is a big departure from the simplicity that the built-in Windows Notepad offers.

Notepad (in Windows) has a unique feature that a lot of people don't know about. If you open a file in Notepad where the first line contains ".LOG" you will automatically see the current time and date appended to the end of the file. Here is how it works:
A couple of weeks ago I covered a great find/replace feature that most users aren't aware is in Notepad++, and today we want to go through my favorite TextFX features that you've probably got installed but haven't played around with. When going through the setup process Notepad++ by default will install some plugins, one of which is labeled as NPPTextFX.
As a geek I always find myself firing up Notepad because of how fast it is, plus it's nice not being flooded with toolbar buttons. A free utility called Nocs will cater to those that feel the same way about Notepad, but also want some sort of synchronization with Google Docs.
Notepad++ has been a long time favorite app of mine when it comes to text editors. It seems to have the right mix of features, and if you use it enough you'll start coming across some gems that can really save time.
I regularly find myself in a situation where I have to open large text or log files, and trying to view them using the built-in Windows Notepad will return a message saying that the "file is too large for Notepad". Heck, sometimes my trusty Notepad++ can't even handle them.

I can't even tell you how many people that I know who are truly dedicated to using Notepad for their day to day basic writing tasks. The no-frills design minimizes distractions, and lets you get the job done quickly.
There are all kinds of Notepad replacements out there, and it makes perfect sense why. Notepad is one of those apps that people use because it starts fast, is lightweight, and for most purposes it does what you need it to. And then there are other solutions out there like Notepad++, Notepad2, and many others. For some people even those can be overkill though.
Notepad++ is definitely one of the best text editors for Windows, and pretty soon it will be getting even better. The new Notepad++ 5.0 is currently in Beta, and it includes a feature I've been waiting a long time for: auto-completion! As you can see in the screenshot above I was writing a bit of HTML, and as I started to close the "center" tag it offered to auto-complete it for me.
We have talked about text editors a lot on CyberNet before because they can help you be a lot more productive. Up until a few weeks ago I was using Notepad++ on a regular basis, but then I came across PSPad that seemed a little nicer. I do quite a bit of website programming, and that got me thinking whether there was anything better than PSPad out there.
I can't believe that I'm actually saying this, but I may have stumbled across a text editor that is better than Notepad++! In yesterday's Daily Downloads I included a free program called PSPad, which sounded like a nice text and code editor.
Hard drives are becoming huge these days, and most applications have begun to make use of the abundant space that barely ever gets filled up. I'm a big proponent to full-featured applications as long as they serve a purpose, but size isn't always the best representation of quality. To prove that, I set out to find 15 top-notch apps that take up little to no room on your hard drive.
We’ve covered several utilities in the past that can be used to tweak Vista: TweakVista, TweakUAC, and Vispa. All of those provide some nice functionalities when it comes to tweaking Vista, and there is a new one that was just released called VistaTweaker (Download Mirror).

I’m sure that you’ve seen ASCII art similar to the image pictured above. It’s where someone takes a photo and arranges characters in a precise way to accurately represent the original image. Take our logo for example, in the above image a bunch of characters and spaces were placed next to each other until they created something that looked right.
