Windows only We've come across quite a few photo viewing and editing applications in the past, but Zoner Photo Studio Free is one of the more powerful apps that we've seen.

The free and portable Radical Image Optimization Tool (RIOT) has been an app I've recommended for a few years now (I think I've been using it since about 2008). As the name suggests it focuses on doing one thing, and doing it well: optimizing images. It can compress, resize, adjust, and convert your images in a way that leaves you in control of the end result.

There are plenty of image editors out there these days, but there aren't too many that offer some of the advanced functionality that you find in Photoshop. Some of those apps, such as GIMP or Paint.NET, are great alternatives that a lot of users have come to rely on, and I'd have to put StylePix in that same category.

Windows only If you've ever toyed around with any digital camera for five minutes, you know that the pictures it takes often look different than what you saw in real-life. Common complaints include photos being too bright/dark or having an odd-looking color balance.

We always like coming across an interesting free application... especially when it sets out to accomplish a lot of what a paid application does. That's exactly the first impression I got when using Artweaver. They don't come out and say they are trying to emulate Photoshop, but they don't need to.

It's almost a guarantee that a Windows user can find a freeware application that will do all the things they want, and more. It's so easy to take hundreds of pictures these days, but what is someone to do with all of those pictures once they've been taken? With the increase in popularity of digital cameras has come an increase in online photo services for printing your photos and and sharing them with others.

Thanks to Max, we received an invite to try out Aviary. It's a suite of web-based applications for "people who create." When I say a suite of applications, I mean it.  In all, they offer (well, eventually they'll offer) 18 different applications that each have their own purpose and function.
