CyberNotes: Hot Corners in Windows

One of the features in Mac OS X that often gets some attention is what's called "hot corners." It's a simple concept that gives the user an opportunity to assign actions that are performed whenever their mouse hits a corner of the screen. With the help of some free Windows apps you too will also be able to bask in the goodness known as hot corners!

CyberNotes: HTML Signatures in Apple Mail

Now that I'm up and running on my Mac I decided to give the Apple Mail program a shot. It's the built-in email solution that is bundled with Mac OS X, and also lets you do things like leave notes to yourself or manage a todo list. One thing that I quickly noticed was that it doesn't directly include support for HTML signatures.

CyberNotes: Ways to Shutdown Your Computer

This article might seem familiar to some of you because we've covered shutdown utilities quite a bit in the past, but rest easy knowing that this is going to be different than anything you may or may not have read. We're going to cover some of the best shutdown programs and tips out there since, as Ashley has pointed out, this coming Saturday is Shutdown Day.

IE Tab in Opera?

If you're using Firefox there is a very good chance that you've heard of the IE Tab extension. For many of us it helped ease the burden of switching to Firefox as the primary browser back when developers didn't see Firefox as a viable alternative. That is not nearly as big of a problem as it once was.

Restore Firefox 3 Smart Bookmarks

Back in October 2007 we previewed a new feature in Firefox 3 called Smart Bookmarks. Firefox 3 has a more advanced bookmarking system, and keeps tabs (no pun intended) on the sites that you visit the most. When those two things collide they form what has come to be known as Smart Bookmarks.

CyberNotes: Take Ownership of Files in Vista

Microsoft has made some good efforts to make Vista a lot more secure than previous versions of Windows by locking down files and folders on your system. They must have figured if it's verging on painful for you to move or delete the files then it would probably be difficult for viruses to do the same. What if you wanted to modify or delete a system file for one reason or another?

Firefox 3: Have I Visited this Site Before?

There's a new feature in Firefox 3 Beta 5 that I just came across yesterday when using the browser, and I'm not sure how long it has been there. What I did was I clicked on the icon for our site which brought up what would normally be security-related information for the page your viewing. Then I clicked the More Information button:

CyberNotes: Always Group Similar Taskbar Buttons in Windows

Grouping similar Taskbar buttons in Windows is either a feature you love or hate. It's nice because when your Taskbar starts to get full it will start grouping applications together to conserve space.

CyberNotes: Bookmark and Jump to Favorite Folders

How often do you open and save files on your computer? I'm sure that even the most casual users will do it several times throughout the day. Whether it be adding an attachment to an email, uploading a photo to a website, or simply saving a document you've been working on... opening and saving files is a part of our computer-driven lives.

CyberNotes: Backup Files When Your Computer is Idle

The biggest reasons that I hear as to why people don't perform backups is that they are either too lazy to set them up, or there just isn't a good time to schedule them. The later excuse is often because they don't want to "waste" their computer's processing power and memory performing a backup when they are actually trying to use their computer.

CyberNotes: Add/Remove Programs in the "Open With" Menu

In Windows when you right-click on a file there will likely be an "Open With" menu that lists the various applications that can be used to open that specific file. I use it all of the time because there's never really just one application that I want to open a file.

CyberNotes: iPhone Tips and Review

Before we dive into today's CyberNotes, we just wanted to point out that this isn't the usual Microsoft Monday article. We're taking a break from talking about Microsoft to talk about none other than a competitor of theirs, Apple.  Over the last couple of months, we've received several emails and questions regarding the iPhones we purchased back at the end of December.

CyberNotes: Using Gmail Filters

One of the reasons that I love Gmail the most is the remarkably powerful filter system that is integrated into it. With the filtering system you can analyze emails as they hit your Inbox, and then perform certain actions on them. If you spend the time to setup quality filters it can almost be like having your own personal secretary to sift through emails, but it's a lot cheaper. ;)

CyberNotes: Syncing iPhone Bookmarks with Firefox

When Apple added iPod Touch/iPhone bookmark synchronization to iTunes they, for whatever reason, didn't include Firefox as an option. As it stands right now you can synchronize your iPhone bookmarks with Safari (available on Windows and Mac) or Internet Explorer (available on Windows).

CyberNotes: Track Packages

I remember when online stores first started popping up everyone was wondering how in the world such a marketplace would continue to exist. At the time online prices were about the same as they were in the retail stores, but shipping costs killed any savings that you would have received. Now things are not only cheaper online, but a lot of stores offer free shipping on purchases.

CyberNotes: System Restore Tips & Tricks

The Windows System Restore functionality has been around since the days of Windows ME, and it pretty rough around the edges. At that time I remember having issues with it storing viruses into the restore points that it created, and it made cleaning up other people's computers a pain because you had to wipe out all of their restore points.

CyberNotes: Shortcut to Close Multiple Programs

A couple of weeks we wrote up a tutorial on how to create a single batch file that would simultaneously launch several different applications. It's a handy little trick that many people found useful because they are frequently running the same programs on their computer. For example, when you start your computer you might open a browser, media player, and document editor.
