When it comes to portable media players like Microsoft's Zune or Apple's iPod, we always find ourselves asking, "What could they possibly do next?" In Microsoft's case, the next "big thing" is possibly HD. Engadget recently posted some images from an apparent marketing campaign. One of the images clearly includes the new ZuneHD logo, and another gives us a glimpse at what the device looks like.
It sounds almost surreal to actually happen, but many Zune owners are waking up this morning to find that their 30 GB Zunes aren't working. Upon first reading the headline over at Gizmodo, we were thinking that it was just a few isolated cases, but after further investigation, it's happening to many, many people.
Perhaps Microsoft was hoping to take a little bit of the spotlight away from Apple (their iPod announcement is coming tomorrow) by confirming the new Zune line-up today? Yes, new Zune's are on the way. Consumers can expect some extra storage space for both the hard drive and flash models.
With all of the frenzy surrounding Apple's iPod, Microsoft's Zune seems to have been forgotten about even though it's a quality product. While a majority of people out there have at least heard of the iPod, there are probably still many who don't really know the Zune exists. And those that have heard of it may not be aware of some of the great features that it offers.
The Spring update for the Zune is launching today, and several new features have been added. One of the biggest changes is that now the video store has expanded to include TV shows. They've got about 800 TV shows available and each show is priced at $1.99 (160 Microsoft Points) per episode.
One of the features on Microsoft's Zune that users have praised is the capability to wirelessly sync files and share music. Up until this point, that's really all that the wireless was used for but now news is starting to unfold that Microsoft will be utilizing the wireless for games.
When Microsoft's Zune first launched, the phrase "three days or three plays, whichever comes first" described part of the digital rights management that Microsoft imposed. It meant that if users transferred audio content between Zune devices, they'd have either three days or three plays to listen to the song at which point the song would expire, even if it hadn't been played at all. With the launch of the new generation of Zunes and the updated firmware for older Zunes came a new rule that gives users 3 plays with no restriction on how many days the song can be played.
Tomorrow is a big day for Microsoft's Zune. Not only is it the launch date for their new line-up of Zune's, but they're also launching new "Zune Originals." The site for Zune Originals will go live tomorrow, and customers can go there to customize their Zune by size, color, and more importantly, illustration.
