First off, I would like to give a big thanks to Chris for writing such a great article!

@Bobby: The LiveCD does run a little slow when booting it up, but after the operating system is fully loaded it is fairly accurate in terms of speed. I have found that Ubuntu runs at about the same speed as XP does (at least on every system I’ve tried). A lot of people will say it is faster but Windows excels at some things and Linux excels at others. It really just depends on the computer user.

@s: Running Ubuntu in VMware gives a good representation of what features to expect, but it is really a horrible representation of speed since it has to share the resources with your Windows PC.

It depends on your hardware, but I installed it on my old test machine that only is a 750mhz with 192MB RAM and it ran faster than XP. I found the same was true on my modern laptop.

an easier way to test ubuntu would be to download the vmware player and the ubuntu virtual appliance

I tried Ubuntu on Live CD a couple months ago, but it ran really slow. I know this is because I was running it from a CD, but I would like to know how fast it runs compared to Windows XP.
