Attualmente gli sviluppatori sono in una fase di brainstorming in cui accumulare idee da implementare nella prossima release. Per raccogliere quanti più consigli e sollecitazioni da parte degli utenti gli sviluppatori hanno messo online il wiki Firefox/Feature Brainstorming editabile da chiunque abbia creato un account con user e password. Tra le idee più stravaganti c’è l’aggiunta di un tema che ricalchi quello di IE7, mentre tra le più utili, un private browsing per la navigazione anonima, possibilità di tagging sulla cronologia di navigazione, installazione dei cosiddetti extension pack (compilation di estensioni raggruppate). Naturalmente non è dato sapere quali di queste idee appena abbozzate verrà inclusa in Firefox 3. Comunque è molto interessante il concetto di poter contribuire allo sviluppo del browser. Per ora, le novità accertate di Firefox 3.0 saranno le seguenti: innanzitutto segnalibri e cronologia andranno in pensione per fare spazio ai cosiddetti “Places” (di cui ancora non si conosce il funzionamento), l’altra grossa novità riguarderà l’infrastruttura grafica che passerà da gfx alla libreria grafica Cairo 2-D. Per quanto riguarda invece il motore di rendering è previsto l’abbandono di Gecko 1.8 (condiviso da Firefox 1.5 ma anche dalla nuova release 2.0) e l’ implementazione di Gecko 1.9a1 rilasciato il 7 aprile scorso. Su http://ftp.mozilla.org/ è possibile scaricare la versione 3.0 alpha di Firefox, mentre su Cybernetnews è possibile scaricare la versione Portable di Firefox in modo da provarlo senza sovrascrivere i profili della nostra versione di Firefox stabile (1.5 o 2.0 che sia). Also note that this is NOT Firefox 2 Alpha 2. Firefox 2 work is being done on the branch, not the trunk. We can expect Firefox 2 a2 to be released some time in May 2006.
