It appears that the person who took control of the Google Blog last night merely registered the blog…and how did they do that? Simple, Google deleted their blog by accident. This then opened the door for anyone to register that address. So I guess it wasn’t as big of a deal as everyone thought it was, but it was funny anyways. This is what Google had to say about the event:
We’ve determined the cause of tonight’s outage. The blog was mistakenly deleted by us (d’oh!) which allowed the blog address to be temporarily claimed by another user. This was not a hack, and nobody guessed our password. Our bad.

Not going to oppose what Google says, but couldn’t it just be a good tactic to deny the fact that they were hacked?
I was thinking that also, but if it was really hacked I would have thought the individual would have added something to the existing site instead of deleting the blog all together. We may never know though.
