[...] Cybernet News have picked on an interesting story about anti-plagiarism site Turnitin being sued by students for copyright violation. The students sneakily applied for copyrights on some of their papers, and then submitted them to Turnitin. Because Turnitin has an automated essay submission service designed to be used by teachers, the papers were accepted. Now those same students are suing Turnitin for $900,000. [...]

It probably will get thrown out in court, but at least someone is making a stand against what Turnitin is doing. I don't think it is right for them to have copies of my work if they don't explicitly have my consent for it.

I think plagiarism is definitely a problem, but I don't necessarily think that turnitin.com is exactly the solution for it.

Also, I think just because the kids submitted the papers with the intent to sue is enough for a judge to throw it out. Who knows!

The question is whether the students filed a properly formatted DMCA complaint with the website, and whether that the website took down the offending content or not.

Since they uploaded their own copyrighted content, I dont think they would have a case anyway, even if they wrote a note asking it not be archived.

Wuhu! I had a teacher last year who went psycho with turnitin.com. She had us submit a draft to the site, then highlighted every other word as "plagiarism." she thought any two or three words put together that were used by someone else before were plagiarism and had 2 b quoted. One kid joked, "I've got it, I'll just put the whole essay in quotes." I was able to switch out of the class, but I don't know what those that stayed did.
