Tweak Firefox's Password Saver Without An Extension

I was recently using Firefox and came across another site that I couldn’t store my password for. I got a little frustrated and said to myself “there has to be a way to fix that”. So I then started to search Google for ways to force Firefox to remember my passwords on more sites.

I finally came across a bookmarklet that would remove the autocomplete=”off” from the form fields on the page. It worked on all of the sites that I wanted it to, my bank account, email accounts, etc…! It was so great that I thought I better share with you the 10 second process of setting this up (without needing to install an extension to do it).

  1. Bookmark this link: Password Saver. To bookmark the link just right-click on it and select “Bookmark This Link…”.
  2. The next time you find a site that won’t remember your password just click on the bookmark. It will then remove all instances of autocomplete=”off”.
  3. Type your username and password into the site and press submit.
  4. That’s all! You should now be prompted to let Firefox remember your password.

Unfortunately this does not work on every site, but it has worked on all that I have tried. The most popular sites that this is used for are Hotmail and Yahoo. This one definitely earns its place in my bookmark toolbar.

Didn’t work. When I clicked on the bookmark it took me to a Yahoo page with a 500 Internal Server Error

I don’t know why it didn’t work for you. I have verified and the link works fine.

Nice! But my browser is Safari. Anyone reading this on a Mac know enough js to do this for Safari? TIA!

Sorry, but I don’t have a Mac to try and figure it out.

Works great on Firefox! I never liked websites telling me what was safe and what was not. I am the only person who has access to my computer, so there is no reason to not have my browser remember my passwords.

I would love a Safari one as well.

I’m trying to use this tip, especially for Yahoo. I guess I’m stuck at your instruction #1 !!. It says to “Bookmark this link”. How does one bookmark a link? I know how to bookmark a page, but doing that to this cybernetnews page does nothing for me. And when I click on the link “Password Saver” in your #1 line, all it does is give me a popup like you show at top. Can’t seem to find the correct thing I am supposed to be bookmarking. HELP a computer dummy, please.

  8. Avatar

My god, I can’t tell you how happy I am that I don’t have to log into Yahoo a million times everyday. You’re my hero.

To bookmark the link just right-click on it and select “Bookmark This Link…”.

  12. Avatar

Yes, No Script would definitely cause problems since this needs javascript in order to run. Sorry I forgot to mention that.

Anyone figured out a way to get this to work on a Windows CE device? Internet Explorer on there is being.. problematic. Or, any version of Internet Explorer for that matter…
    Thanks!

fine, but doesn’t work on a page with frames. I don’t understand javascript enough to adapt the code.
    Can you help me ?

Looking at the code on that page reveals that this trick will not work. It only works for certain sites.

Is the ‘Password Saver’ Link broken? I get a ‘404′ when I clicked it

  23. Avatar

thanks for this! I was looking for something to make mail.live.com work in FF but this is a great substitute. Thanks again!

  24. Avatar

It’s not a link, you need to right-click on it and create a bookmark from it.

  25. Avatar

    Unbelievably simple. Thanks. :)

No problem. I believe there is also a Greasemonkey script that does the same thing and requires even less thought, but for the few times I need to use it I find this bookmarklet to be perfect.

  27. Avatar

Thanks. This works on the password field of my bank, but not on the username field…

  28. Avatar

That must be a quirk of the website, and there’s nothing you can do to make Firefox recognize it.

  29. Avatar

Seriously, is this safe? Can someone illustrate to me the code, so I know this is not sending my passwords to somewhere I don’t want them to be?!

  30. Avatar

This is completely safe. Certain sites, such as banks, just want to block users from storing passwords in case their computer is stolen, or someone gets unauthorized access to it. As long as you feel comfortable storing the password it is okay.

Hi, can you tell me why it won’t work on [mydouglas.douglas.bc.ca]? And if “Password saver” won’t work, what will?
    Thanks.

  32. Avatar

Maybe it’s got to do with Javascript.

No, it won’t work with that. It looks like they took some additional steps to make it difficult for the browser to remember the password.

  34. Avatar

Ryan, so what can we do for that mydouglas.douglas.bc.ca site?

You would probably have to use a specialized form filler (like RoboForm) for it to work, and even still I’m not sure if they’ll be able to pick up on it.

Finally, worked like a charm on Verizon, who chg’d their webpage over a year ago to make their customer experience more miserable, incredibly, I didn’t think it could get much worse…
…and by the way, Safari absolutely sucks. Use firefox.

Not working with most sites I use anymore. Using Firefox 3, if that makes a difference now. Perhaps someone can look at this and see if it needs an update to work with new sites.

Its really stupid in the first place that web site owners can decide whether YOU can save YOUR password for their site on YOUR own computer.

  45. Avatar

Yeah I had the same problem with this not working with FF3, so I googled for a bit and came across this: [dailygyan.com]

Seems to work just fine for now.

  46. Avatar

Thanks for sharing, but it still does not work with some sites as Amazon or Paypal for examples. :(

Is there any way I can have Firefox save my password “without” it asking me if I want it to?

I did this to my firefox. It automatically saves any password and writes the contents of submitted forms that contain password fields to a text file. I think it would be frowned upon to release something like this, though… the wrong people would use it in the wrong ways.

This is not safe. This guy is collecting peoples’ password. Don’t follow the instruction.

Um, okay. It’s a JavaScript bookmarklet… if you don’t trust the code learn JavaScript and look at it yourself.

  54. Avatar

So simple, exactly what I needed. Thanks Ryan.
Just curious, why does it nullify onsubmits? just turning autocompletes on does the job (at least for the one site i tested it on).

When you start typing in the username Firefox should automatically complete it for you, and once you press the tab key it should fill in the password.

On fasttrak.com, if I run the bookmarklet, it causes the login to give a weird error about captcha being not correct.
