Webware 100 Awards 2008.png

Webware has just announced the winners of their Webware 100 contest for 2008. Just like last year, different sites were nominated and then Webware editors picked the finalists and users voted for their favorites. Clearly this year had a better turn-out of voters. Take a look at these stats:

  • Votes cast in 2007: 489,467
  • Votes cast in 2008: Over 1.9 million

Once again, there were 10 different categories and 10 winners in each. Interestingly enough, more than half of the 1.9 million votes for the 300 finalists went to just 10 different sites which tells us that those sites have a rather large number of supporters. Most of them are no surprise, and they include:

  • Facebook
  • Firefox
  • Google
  • iTunes
  • MySpace
  • YouTube
  • DeviantArt
  • Friendster
  • Gaia Online
  • Maxthon

Looking through the complete list made me realize that there are some sites I really need to go checkout because while I may have heard of the sites, I haven’t visited them before. Here’s my list of sites I need to take a look at in each category because there must be something great about them if they landed a Webware 100 award, right?

  • Audio: eMusic, Live365
  • Commerce: Etsy
  • Communication: ooVoo
  • Productivity: Sandy
  • Search and Reference: Hakia
  • Utility and Security: ShareFile
  • Video: Veodia, VoiceThread

If we had to pick a favorite from each category, here’s what they’d be:

  • Audio: iTunes or Last.fm
  • Browsing: Firefox or the iPhone
  • Commerce and Events: Amazon or eBay
  • Communication: Gmail
  • Productivity: Remember the Milk or Zoho
  • Publishing and Photography: Flickr or WordPress
  • Search and Reference: Google or Wikipedia
  • Social: Facebook
  • Utility and Security: OpenID
  • Video: YouTube
