I just upgraded to a quad-core with 8 gigs of ram and installed windows 7. That should run that new taskbar and those control panel icons.

I agree with a lot of the points about Windows 7 mentioned here. It is no faster than Vista, it is not any more backwards compatible than Vista either. This was the major complaint about Vista, and Windows 7 was suppose to be the solution for this. Software is expensive and nobody wants to have to keep rebuying their software collection every time a new version of Windows comes out.

The lack of an email client really bites. I don't want to use a web based email. I like my email on MY computer, not some server, and you can't import with a web based email.

I am also good at troubleshooting computer problems, or I was, up until I upgraded to Windows 7, and now it seems like Windows 7 crashes over half the time that I try to use it, and it's always a different problem.

The comment about the touch screen not going to work is another thing. Even if it does work, for most applications, using your finger is more, not less awkward, and don't even get me started on how much a touch screen monitor is.

There are also too many other problems that I have discovered with Windows 7 and I have only been using it for 2 weeks now. All other versions of Windows, good or bad, took me at least about 6 months of use to uncover the number of problems that I have already discoverd in Windows 7.

The real kicker here is that I would never have guessed that I would ever go back to Vista again once I got the chance to ditch it, but just when you things can't get any worse, it does, especially with Microsoft.

In fact, I will be reinstalling Vista soon after I finish this reply. Now does that say something about how crappy Windows 7 is or what? ;D

The upgrade from Vista is definately not foolproof. It didn't link my Vista documents into the new library, didn't capture my Explorer 7 favorites, and trying to get from Windows Mail to Live Mail is a showstopper. And worst of all, the help functions are no improvement at all. I keep getting refered to the user forum, which requires you to surf through 8000 topics being beaten to death by nerds. There is no support for people who look at a computer as a tool rather than a way of life. I got the family pack but doubt that I'll use the other licenses.

I tried LINUX in its various flavors. There just isn't any usable software for it that someone who is not well versed in the INS & OUTS of the OS can install and run. (Lindows , RedHat, Debian, Umbuntu, . . .)

Drivers for the various Linux variants were difficult to use if they weren't in the original install package.

Windows biggest draw is the apps. And to use them all you do is put in a disk, and it installs for you. (Some better than others.) No RAR, GZIP, whatever files to unpack. No recompiling the kernel, etc. I just go to the store (or online), buy it, use it. If you can get LINUX to do that nad make the driver support easier, you'll have a MUCH better chance.

I tried the Umbuntu DVR package that I found on the web, it (the OS) would not work at all. No way to figure out why not. No idea what to try to fix it. I assume the kernel was compiled for different hardware that what I was using.

I wish MS would look at OS/2. It was a quality OS that WORKED. It did not try to be an app unto itself. Small, Quick, Secure, RELIABLE. A True Object Oriented OS, instead of the Object Based approach MS uses.

The Kernel of the OS should ONLY support the apps running on it. (Security & Resource Management) The GUI and all the other crap should not be a part of the OS, but an optional module that runs on top.

LESS IS MORE! Stop with the BLOAT-WARE already.

I've seen some of the better Win7 upgrades show up in my Vista upgrades. Why do I need 7,8,9 etc.

I have Win 7. I just downgraded from Windows Vista To Win 7. All the custom and administration options are hidden. The show desktop is on the right hand side so one plays ping pong between the start menu and the "Show Desktop" ability. I don't know what drunks MS gets to beta test this junk. They could have changed a few things up without sacrificing standard usability. I might as well switch to linux all the hunting and pecking I'm doing.

vista proved to the world it sucked. 7 will do the same.... just give it time. microsoft has lost touch with what people want and need. screw them. linux is so much better, but most windows users are afraid to try it... they might like it. the very best os out there is OS X.
