Paul Thurrot has a great article for those people who plan on sticking with Windows XP even after Vista is released. He discusses some of the applications that you can use in XP that will give you the same functionality as the ones offered in Vista. Here is a brief overview of the software replacements that that he mentions:
- Windows Search: Windows Desktop Search
- Windows Defender: Anti-spyware
- Internet Explorer 7: Web browser
- Windows Sidebar and Gadgets: Mini-Applications
- Windows Backup: File Backup and Restore
- Windows Mail: Email
- Windows Calendar: Standards-Based Scheduling
- Windows Photo Gallery: Photo Management and Sharing
- Windows Media Player 11: Digital Media Jukebox
- Windows Movie Maker 6: Digital Movie Editing
- Windows Media Center: Digital Media in the Living Room
As you can see he did a pretty good job covering all of the different aspects of Windows Vista. The funny thing is that I haven’t used many of those applications in the few weeks that I have been using Vista as my primary Operating System. From that list I have used the Windows Search and Windows Defender. Microsoft may be good at some things but there will always be applications that I like better than what they include.

Just no need to go to Vista for another couple of years, absolutely.
Umm, we should replace Media Player 11 with Media Player 11, and IE7 with IE7? You may want to clarify it
.
It is saying that on Windows Vista there is WMP 11 and it is also an alternative for Windows XP users. It might make a little more sense if you read Paul’s article.
