Do you know if search engines can index a site that requires a login? Maybe that is why there is a privacy option. Also, enabling the privacy option on a blog that has been running for several months/years won't be of much use, since Google and all the other search engines would have already indexed the content on your site. Although it should block future content being indexed by the search engines. I think it is mostly private blogs that would use this feature.
