Or maybe collapse the toolbar down to a single line of text that displays the status, and if you hover over it the bar will expand to the full view. I agree that there are better ways they can accomplish a good download manager.

What I wondered is why they don’t just show floating transparent buttons at the bottom of the window. But I also like to have some eye candy from time to time (such as Aero on Windows). There will always be the people who want things as stripped down as possible, and those are probably the people that prefer using Windows with the classic theme.

That is true… simplicity is always nice to have. Try using the area to the right of the omnibar (since there isn't a search box there, there's more than enough room). If this is a limitation of the chrome extension system then this ext project is a flop.

I like Chrome, and the lightweight, stable, fast extensions concept sounds great, but how about one extension that doesn’t bring up a giant toolstrip at the bottom of the browser for one button. More complex is not always better in a GUI; I prefer a simpler, cleaner look. What is important, IMO, is complexity within options and functionality. Software should be complex in customization and tweaks, but not in the main interface. If it looks 5 years old, but functions very well, I'd love to use it. If it /performs/ like it's 5 years old, I'll stay away.

“If these are indeed real I can’t help but feel like we’re stepping back 5-years when it comes to interface design.”

That is not necessarily a bad thing.
