ChaserswarA fifteen year old Australian boy is apologizing after he sent YouTube a takedown request, falsely saying that he represented the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.  YouTube received the request and obeyed without even looking into it further!

The request was for clips of “The Chaser’s War on Everything” which ironically is a satirical comedy show. Not only did YouTube remove the clips, they also went one step further and sent warnings to the accounts of those who uploaded them.

One one hand, this shows that YouTube is serious about removing questionable copyrighted content. On the other hand, you’d think they’d take the time to look into these requests to make sure that they’re valid.

ABC’s lawyers contacted the boy, and of course he’s apologizing for impersonating an ABC employee. You can bet YouTube will take the time to confirm takedown requests in the future!

  1. I think that in the future they will act in the way; take down on every request.

The law (DMCA) provides a way to challenge the take down request. If someone feels that they have been false accused then they can file an appeal.

  2. looks like all the videos are back up because a search for : The Chaser’s War on Everything

    returns a lot of pages.

  3. I have no clue why a 15 year old would want the Chaser removed anyways…unless he was working on behalf of the Australian Government, who are often parodied on the show and made to look like the corrupt morons they are.

I’m sure they will…after all, it is better to be safe than sorry. Google, I’m sure, has learned a lot from their run in with Viacom and they will do whatever possible to prevent anything like that from happening again.

Looks like you might be right.

I think they were just doing it to prove a point: YouTube will do whatever possible to prevent another round of lawsuits.
